Printing this Readme File Introduction and Firmware Upgrade List -------------------------------------- The Trimble Utilities Installation updates all necessary Trimble GPS Total Station 4700/4800 software. This installation comprises a GPS Receiver upgrade and a Communications Processor upgrade for the 4700 and/or 4800. The upgrades contained in this installation package have been selected from the following list. If the upgrades you require are not in the package you have downloaded from the Trimble web site, return to this web site and download the correct package. This readme file contains information for all these upgrades. o 4700 GPS Receiver Version 1.30 (replaces Version 1.20) * 4700 Communications Processor Version 1.43 (replaces Version 1.31 and 1.42) o 4800 GPS Receiver Version 1.30 (replaces Version 1.20) * 4800 Communications Processor Version 1.43 (replaces Version 1.29 and 1.42) * These upgrades were also provided with GPS Receiver Version 1.20. Therefore it may not be necessary to re-install these upgrades is they were previously installed. WinFLASH : Trimble Software Upgrade Application Version 1.05 ------------------------------------------------------------ WinFLASH is a Windows 95/NT PC application which is used to upgrade the software in the Trimble GPS Total Station 4700/4800, and the Trimble Survey Controller TSC1. Full instructions are given while running WinFLASH, and context sensitive help is available by pressing the [Help] button on the WinFLASH screen. For instructions on connecting a Trimble 4700/4800 to a PC, see "Cable Connections" below, or from the Help Contents select the topic "Configuring the 4700/4800 receiver". WinFLASH Software update: o From the "Operation Selection" dialog box it is now possible to check the versions prior to upgrading by selecting "Retrieve software versions" from the menu. The same operation may be selected after upgrading to confirm that the upgrade was successful. Note: For the 4800 receiver, following a Communications Processor upgrade (on 4800 port 3), it is necessary to reconnect the cable to 4800 port 2 (as described in "Cable connections" in the Section "4800 GPS Receiver Version 1.20") and power down/up prior to selecting "Retrieve software versions". The software upgrades installed by WinFLASH are listed in the following sections. Both a GPS Receiver version and Communications Processor version must be installed together, which require separate operations from within WinFLASH. Commset Version 1.18 (PC software which is automatically installed) -------------------- Commset is a Communications Processor Utility used to install Communications software. It is integrated into WinFLASH, and invoked automatically. It can also be used to change the internal radio frequency by selecting from the Start-Programs-WinFLASH menu. 4700 GPS Receiver Version 1.30 ------------------------------ Cable connections: You must connect the DB9/Lemo data cable from your PC's serial port to Port 2 of the 4700 and connect the small power plug to the Office Supply Module. Software updates: o Further improvements to the RTK engine to improve performance in the areas of initialization reliability and operation in high multipath environments. o Enable the Survey Controller to select between RTCM corrections (Type 18/19) or CMR data for RTK surveys, when the data input contains both RTCM and CMR data. o Provide support for meteorological (weather) stations. This is similar to MET3 support in the 4000 receiver. o Maintain full support of RTCM V2.2 for RTK types 18, 19, and support RTCM V2.1 for AdV types 20 and 21. (Types 20 and 21 are only used for the German AdV system). o Update the use of the "Multiple-message indicator" in RTCM Messages 18 and 19 at an RTK reference station to comply with the "intended" specification of RTCM V2.2, and the proposed specification for RTCM V2.3. (For details, see the minutes for the RTCM SC-104 Plenary Meeting, Anaheim, CA, , January 25, 2000). This indicator is set for all 18 and 19 messages (L1 and L2) which are part of the same data epoch (share the same time-tag), except the last message. o The following updates support photogrammetry (aerial photography): - WAAS (Wide Area Augmentation System) corrected positioning. If Survey Controller is being used, this requires V7.6 of the Survey Controller software. Use of WAAS is not necessary for RTK and DGPS surveying. Important note: WAAS is not yet declared fully operational. Until this occurs, it is necessary to first "enable" WAAS to allow certain temporary messages to be received. This process must be repeated whenever the receiver RAM (memory)is cleared, or when the firmware is updated (which automatically clears the RAM). Once WAAS is fully operational, the receiver RAM will have to be cleared one time, following which no further action will be necessary. See the V1.30 release notes available on the Trimble web site for details. - Enable 2 Hz receiver-internal data logging. 4700 Communications Processor Version 1.43 ------------------------------------------ The Communications software upgrade is ONLY necessary for 4700 units that have an internal radio. Cable connections: Same as for the 4700 GPS Receiver upgrade given above. Software updates: o Fixes the inability to receive CMR messages at the rover when the base is receiving more than 9 satellites. o Fixes a problem which caused degraded radio reception when the rover was in close proximity to a base TrimMarkII/IIe transmitter. o Add the ability to change the "over-the-air baud rate" via a the TSC1 handheld at the base and rover (Survey Controller Version 7.00 and above). o Add the ability to read and set the base radio type at the base (supported types: TrimTalk at 4800 baud; TrimTalk at 9600 baud; and TrimMarkII/IIe) (Survey Controller Version 7.00 and above). 4800 GPS Receiver Version 1.30 ------------------------------ Cable connections: You must connect the DB9/Lemo data cable from your PC's serial port to Port 2 of the 4800 and connect the small power plug to the Office Supply Module. See the 4800 Operation Manual for further instructions and Figures. Software updates: o Further improvements to the RTK engine to improve performance in the areas of initialization reliability and operation in high multipath environments. o Enable the Survey Controller to select between RTCM corrections (Type 18/19) or CMR data for RTK surveys, when the data input contains both RTCM and CMR data. o Provide support for "Met3" meteorological (weather) stations. This is similar to Met3 support in the 4000 receiver. (Ports 1 and 2 only). o Maintain full support of RTCM V2.2 for RTK types 18, 19, and support RTCM V2.1 for AdV types 20 and 21. 4800 Communications Processor Version 1.43 ------------------------------------------ The Communications software upgrade is necessary for 4800 units both with and without an internal radio. Cable connections: You must connect the DB9/Lemo data cable from your PC serial port to Port 3 of the 4800 (without connecting the small power plug to the Office Supply Module). In addition, unless the 4800 is being powered by a pole battery, power must be supplied to Port 2, using either another data cable with the Office Supply Module (Figure 2-7) or an external battery (Figure 2-6). See the 4800 Operation Manual for further instructions and Figures. Having Difficulty Connecting to the 4700/4800? ---------------------------------------------- If WinFLASH cannot establish a connection to your receiver, as indicated by one of several messages, first carefully check the cable connections. These are described above in the sections "Cable connections" for the GPS Receiver update, and the Communications Processor update. Make sure that the GPS receiver is powered up (green LED on). The following may also solve the problem: o Close any other active applications, one of which may be already using the serial port. Exit WinFLASH and restart. o Check that you have specified the correct PC Comms Port, 1 or 2. o Although unlikely, an output may be enabled on the GPS port 2 which is preventing the WinFLASH connection. This can be disabled by cold booting the GPS receiver as follows: - Power down the GPS receiver using the power key. - Press the key to power up, and HOLD DOWN the key (do not release) until the red satellite LED turns full on (about 30 seconds). - Release the key - the GPS receiver will power down. - Power on the receiver in the usual way by pressing the power key.
