December 2001 Mt. Hood Pictures
Pictures from the Dec. 2001 Mt. Hood Trip
Below are pictures from our trip to Mt. Hood on December 28 & 29,
2001. The original plan was to climb to the summit via Cooper Spur on
the north side. Snow conditions were good, but the approach was miles
longer than planned; we needed to reach Tie-In rock the first night,
and were still several miles short by dark. As a result, the next day
we went up to see the Cooper Spur route, before playing in the snow and
heading home.
The approach from the ski area is ~3 miles up to the Tilly Jane
campground. To do the route in winter, allow 3+ days- 1 day from ski
area to Tilly Jane; 1 from Tilly Jane to Tie-In Rock, 1 to summit and
walk out. From Tie-In Rock to the summit is ~2600' vertical up the
nose. Descend either Cooper Spur (steep!) or the South Route to
Timberline Lodge, with a car shuttle back to retrieve car at ski area.

- On the trail towards timberline - note
the peak just visible above the trees.
- Paul at a rest break on the way up the gully
towards Cooper Spur - Cooper Spur is the ridge in the left of the
picture; the route goes straight up the nose.
- Looking down the gully - the valleys are
filled with cloud this morning.
- Cooper Spur - the route goes to the left
of the mouth of this gully, up to the high point on the left edge of
the picture. From there, follow the ridge to the saddle (Tie-In Rock)
and then up the nose to the summit. We got to the top of the hill on
the right of the picture.
- Looking back down the gully - this is
the same gully as before, looking ~north back the way we came.
