Pictures from the Dec. 2001 Mt. Hood Trip

Below are pictures from our trip to Mt. Hood on December 28 & 29, 2001. The original plan was to climb to the summit via Cooper Spur on the north side. Snow conditions were good, but the approach was miles longer than planned; we needed to reach Tie-In rock the first night, and were still several miles short by dark. As a result, the next day we went up to see the Cooper Spur route, before playing in the snow and heading home.

The approach from the ski area is ~3 miles up to the Tilly Jane campground. To do the route in winter, allow 3+ days- 1 day from ski area to Tilly Jane; 1 from Tilly Jane to Tie-In Rock, 1 to summit and walk out. From Tie-In Rock to the summit is ~2600' vertical up the nose. Descend either Cooper Spur (steep!) or the South Route to Timberline Lodge, with a car shuttle back to retrieve car at ski area.
